Wayne Rooney recently accepted a contract which will see him become the highest paid player in England, a staggering offer of £300,000 a week has been agreed with Manchester United, on a personal view i was happy to see wayne commit to united for another 4 years, but what amazes me is the fact that the mediocre performance of manchester united this season, and the hopes of champions league qualification out of sight he has decided to commit himself to Manchester United.
His worth and quality to Manchester United cannot be doubted, in a season where the team has under-performed, Rooney has been one of the bright sparks, with countless man of the match performances, digging United out of trouble a countless number of times and also contributing with 12 goals and many assists, maybe the appointment of David Moyes his mentor from his days at Everton, the man who gave Wayne the chance to show what talent he possessed at the tender age of 16 ofcourse that memorable strike against arsenal, made him make his mind up anout committing his future to Manchester United.
According to some united fans, this new contract seemed ludicrous and outrageous, not forgetting the fact that this is the same wayne rooney who held united to ransom for the second time in the space of three years, going back to 2010 when he stormed into Sir Alex Fergusons office questioning the clubs ambition, Rooney quoted "I met with David Gill last week and he did not give me any of the assurances i was seeking about the future squad, then i told him that i would not be signing a new contract" this seemed inevitable that Rooney wanted to leave Manchester United, this didn't go down too well with some of the United fans as at the time there was talk of Wayne Joining United's bitter rivals Manchester City, and perhaps that would've been unthinkable for some, it was reported that a group of "Thugs" protested outside his luxury cheshire home, maybe this influenced him to stay on, but however due to the fantastic managerial skills of the great Sir Alex Ferguson, Wayne signed a contract which saw him commit to Manchester United for a further 5 years, some united fans were angry at the manner in which Wayne had treated a club as prestigious as Manchester United, the fans wanted to see performances, and due to missing the first half of that season, Wayne came back stronger with a memorable Overhead kick against Manchester City, a penalty at Ewood park to confirm united were champions for the 19th time going ahead of Liverpool which must have been a moment of joy for Wayne being an Evertonian and strikes against chelsea in the quarter final first leg at stamford bridge, Schalke in the first leg of the semi final, he pretty much fired United to wembley against the Brilliant Barcelona managed by Pep Guardiola, Perhaps one of the best teams of all time, a Match where the spanish giants delivered a footballing masterclass, but however Waynes goal and performance proved just how important he is to Manchester Uniteds future success.
After missing out the title on goal difference in the 2011/12 season to bitter rivals. Manchester City, and Wayne contributing with a staggering 34 goals equalling his feet from the 2009/10 season, The entire United Squad were hurting from this painful experience, no one more then Sir Alex, who acknowledged that he had another Challenge on his hands, after the season had ended Sir Alex made a statement of intent by signing Robin Van Persie, The brilliant dutchman who finished player of the season and top goal scorer for the 2011/12 season, for some United fans it seemed unthinkable but Fergie pulled off perhaps the biggest transfer of the Premier League Era. United fans were amazed and bamboozled by this transfer, some doubting his ability to stay fit, but Sir Alex had other ideas and was stil, hurting from losing the title to Manchester City on goal difference and to go another season without winning the title was unthinkable, with offers from Manchester City and other Top European Clubs, Van Persie chose to join Manchester United. United fans were itching in anticipation to see there new signing who some described the best striker in England at the time linking up with Wayne Rooney, What a signing by Fergie as Robin fired United to title number 20, with 30 goals, the most memorable being the volley against aston villa, Rooneys cross field pass which Robin hit on the volley first time. Van Persie was a man in Demand with his virtuoso displays and brilliant displays, he was almost treated like a GOD! Everyone had forgotten about Wayne and what he had given to United in Previous years, as the brilliant dutchman had bamboozled every United fan.
As the season came to a close, United were in the Quarter Finals of the champions. league against the Mighty Real Madrid and Old traffords Prodigal Son Cristiano Ronaldo a match which was anticipated by the footballing world, Sir Alex VS Jose Mourinho, a battle of the two footballing masterminds. In the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu Sir Alex deployed Rooney on the right hand side of Manchester Uniteds attack With Van Persie as the lone frontman and Danny Welbeck on the left hand side, this was no surprise as Rooney showed once again his ability to sacrifice his own game for his team mates and also contributing with an assists that led to Manchester Uniteds goal scored by Danny Welbeck ofcourse from an in swinging corner, What happened in the Second leg was unthinkable, as Rooney was a man in form during that period which was evident with a fantastic strike against Norwich City, and i had met Wayne a week before the second leg and he seemed calm relaxed and happy, never would i have thought he would be left out, out of all the players and on the night he was left out for Danny welbeck, some united fand could not believe it, and thought fergie has made a huge error, but it wasn't too costly in the end as Danny put in his best performance in a United shirt, and with the help of the Referee Real Madrid Progressed, Rooney was left Heartbroken.
Sir Alex announced his retirement just before the end of the season which brought the whole footballing world to a standstill, none other then United fans. during the final home game of the season against swansea Sir Alex had confirmed that Rooney handed in yet another transfer request and he wasn't happy at being taken off a few times, but he wasnt for sale, however Rooney joined in with the title celebrations and the Trophy parade, united fans were hurt, some booing him and some showing appreciation. During the summer when David Moyes took over, he knew he had a job on his hands, nothing more important then keeping Wayne Rooney, Moyes stood firm on his stance that Rooney was not for sale after Jose Mourinho had returned to chelsea he was in search of a striker and made it evident that Rooney was his target, and Wayne wanted to push a move to chelsea. After getting his head right and with the appreciation of the fans, Wayne was being loved again, and we can see why, during the first home game of the season against Chelsea he showed his worth to both teams with a Man of the match display, chasing back tirelessly, defending, attacking, vision and composure.
As the season progressed Rooney began to look comfortable, perhaps David Moyes taking over was the best thing that could have happened to Wayne, after the signing of Juan Mata in january it was evident that moyes was a man with ambition, and in february Wayne committed to united for a further four years, with the chance of being a club ambassador. Some united fans are perhaps still angry at this decision, but wayne is 40 odd goals short of becoming Manchester Uniteds Highest ever goal scorer and surpassing the great Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton. Two transfer requests in the space of 4 years is questionable, but no one can question his commitment and desire on the pitch and just how much of an influence he will be to the younger players and players united are looking to acquire in the future.
